Life Safety, Fire Protection Project Engineer


We’re looking for a full-time, Life Safety Project Engineer to join our Mason & Hanger team located in Indian Head, MD

This position is in support of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division (NSWC IHD) and focused on operations and maintenance (O&M), Capital Investment Projects (CIP) and sustainment, repair, and modernization (SRM) projects in support of approximately 900 buildings. NSWC IHD is also supporting planning and implementation of extensive recapitalization efforts referred to as Energetics Comprehensive Modernization Plan (ECMP). This is a multi-year project which will be based at Indian Head, Maryland.

As the Life Safety, Fire Protection Project Engineer, here’s the work you’ll do:

  • Function as the lead engineer on small to medium scale projects utilizing experience in industrial and government projects or projects of equivalent type and scale including code analysis, fire alarm / mass notification, and fire suppression (water-based and special hazard). This role will support facility staff in tasks including development of technical requirements for new construction and renovation requests for proposal, submittal reviews, site survey, scope definition, and follow through with design and construction submittal review and construction observations.
  • Develop technical requirements for renovation and new construction projects in line with facility, federal, and national codes and standards in support of the development of design requests for proposal (for fire protection / life safety). Includes walk throughs and stakeholder meetings / interviews. Produces project documents to include Drawings (CAD / BIM), Specifications (editing and checking), and support documents (basis of design & reports). Conducts construction phase contract administration activities for life safety / fire protection on project such as Submittals, RFIs, construction support, etc.
  • Perform technical reviews of design packages submitted by colleagues and contract design firms.
  • Create, edit, and check project documents to include plans and BIM models, specifications, and support documents (basis of Design) requests for proposals and statements of work.
  • Create and / or review cost estimates in support of technical requirements development or submittals by contract design firms.
  • Perform engineering calculations and evaluate equipment selection in support of technical requirements development.

This role is for you if you have these skills:

  • Has knowledge of the primary production tools, methods and calculations used throughout the discipline. Properly understands the diverse design process and has strong project experience from inception to substantial completion.
  • Experienced client facing representative of life safety discipline. Ability to create and present ideas to clients in form of drawings, renderings, sketches, and other exhibits. Ability to coordinate and communicate with architects and engineers both internally and externally. Work on site with some limited travel as necessary.
  • Ability to work with other engineers, disciplines, and project managers to ensure project scope is satisfied. Actively supports project manager and leadership with design scope modifications for assigned projects. Actively manages project cost throughout the design. Ensures design constructability and coordination with other disciplines necessary for a successful construction project. Ensures all life safety CA responsibilities for project are handled successfully.
  • Able to regularly function as the Responsible Engineer Of Record accountable for the technical sufficiency of some or all life safety project deliverables – limits of responsibility to be determined in concert with more senior leadership.
  • Must build trusted relationships with colleagues through maintaining ownership for assigned work and delivering efficient and high-quality results. Expected to be a proactive learner, responsible to seek out support when needed, identify expectations, check own work output against quality expectations, and pursue opportunities to grow technical capabilities. Also expected to maintain professional humility and respect in partnership with all team members in pursuit of overall project success. Is further expected to know their own technical limitations and proactively seek out support where needed while maintaining their lead role for the project. Ability to take direction and guidance from more senior staff within company. Ability to provide direction and guidance to less senior staff within department.

  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Engineering, Fire Protection preferred
  • 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • Professional License in Fire Protection Engineering
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain Top Secret security clearance, current active clearance preferred.
  • EXCEL, WORD, PowerPoint, CAD/BIM
  • Great attitude and team player.
  • Successful completion of background screening process.

In compliance with this state’s pay transparency laws, the salary range for this role is $87,440 - $131,160. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. (The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and the applicability of collective bargaining agreements).
