We’re looking for a full-time, Senior Fire Protection / Life Safety Engineer
to join our Mason & Hanger team located in either Glen Allen, VA, Lexington, KY, Chantilly, VA, or Virginia Beach, VA
The Senior Fire Protection Engineer in the Life Safety department will be responsible for leading the fire protection and life safety effort on very challenging projects. The Sr. Fire Protection Engineer is responsible for the Building, Fire, and Life Safety compliance of entire projects, not just fire protection systems.
As the Senior Life Safety, Fire Protection Engineer, here’s the work you’ll do:
- Lead and direct others in production of project documents to include Drawings (CAD / BIM), Specifications (editing and checking) and support documents (basis of design). Check work delegated to other engineers and designers on project to ensure scope is documented successfully. Lead construction phase contract administration activities for life safety department on project such as Submittals, RFIs, construction support, etc.
- Directly perform, or guiding others, in complex engineering calculations.
- Mentor and train other engineers and designers in the department - primarily with on-the-job training & development.
- Be main point of contact to clients for life safety department project responsibilities (meetings, conference calls, comment review/responses, etc.).
- Ensure positive client relationships and client service with focus on winning new work. Supporting business development activities (pursuit opportunities, fee proposals, change modifications).

• Ability to generate project plan, design and work plan capable of meeting (or exceeding) owner’s requirements; maintain successful trajectory of deliverables; seek out innovative solutions in collaboration with others; exercises critical thinking to generate solutions for unique and challenging problems; and is proactive to ensure professional client focused success. The Sr. Engineer gains and maintains perspective beyond the technical silo of project fire protection engineering and is usually responsible for all aspects of code compliance. Develops solutions in anticipation of challenges and leverages perspective to ensure project team is appropriately focused.
• Experienced client facing representative of life safety department. Actively participates in business development to include project pursuit opportunities, developing fee proposals and contract change modifications. Provides critical involvement to ensure client success can be achieved. Success requires projects to be: delivered on time, within budget, well-coordinated, code compliant, and constructible.
• Ability to function as senior technical project leader for department providing training and mentoring to more junior staff within team. Expected to have command of design process, tools, procedures, calculations, systems and equipment used throughout the department. Ensures the design is coordinated with other departments consultants. Ability to create and present ideas, internally and externally, in form of drawings, data, and other exhibits. Ability to coordinate and communicate with architects and engineers both internally and externally.
• Able to be the responsible Engineer Of Record accountable for technical sufficiency of all life safety department project deliverables, to include all aspects of the discipline.
• Must build trusted relationships with colleagues through maintaining ownership for assigned work and delivering efficient and high-quality results. Expected to be a proactive learner, responsible to seek out support when needed, identify expectations, check own work output against quality expectations, and pursue opportunities to grow technical capabilities. Also expected to maintain professional humility and respect in partnership with all team members in pursuit of overall project success. Is further expected to know their own technical limitations and proactively seek out support where needed while maintaining their lead role for the project. Ability to take direction and guidance from more senior staff within company. Ability to provide direction and guidance to less senior staff within department.
And if you have these qualifications:
- Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Engineering in a relevant Engineering discipline, Fire Protection preferred
- 8+ years of relevant experience.
- Professional License in Fire Protection Engineering
- Must be eligible to obtain a security clearance
- EXCEL, WORD, PowerPoint, CAD/BIM
- Great attitude and team player.
- Successful completion of background screening process.
In compliance with this state’s pay transparency laws, the salary range for this role is $104,480 - $156,720. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. (The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and the applicability of collective bargaining agreements).
