We’re looking for a full-time, Fire Protection Engineer

to join our Mason & Hanger team located in either Glen Allen, VA or Lexington, KY, Chantilly, VA, or Virginia Beach, VA
 
Fire Protection Engineer in the Life Safety department able to engineer systems on medium-to-large scale projects and/or provide full engineering responsibility on smaller scale projects with limited guidance from more senior engineers. Partner with senior engineers to generate project/task vision, to resolve challenging problems, and to ensure/verify successful trajectory of deliverables.
As the Life Safety, Fire Protection Project Engineer, here’s the work you’ll do:
•    Create and edit project documents to include Drawings (CAD / BIM), Specifications (editing and checking) and support documents (basis of design).
•    Develop a more thorough understanding of the intricacies of sprinkler and fire alarm systems. Gain more experience in the interpretation of building and life safety codes and standards.
•    Perform engineering calculations using full suite of software tools.
•    Develop ability to direct designer staff in production of drawings & details. To include marking-up and redlining drawings for others and assuming ownership of delegated tasks.
•    Support construction phase contract administration activities such as Submittals, RFI's, construction support, etc.

This role is for you if you have these skills:

  • Able to actively seek and develop competency across all aspects of the discipline. Develop command of typical department responsibilities is necessary in progression towards more senior engineering positions. Perform engineering calculations competently and efficiently. Select equipment types and edit specifications. Highly proficient with drawing production software (CADD, BIM, Revit) and calculation / software tools used in department.
  • Begin to assume client facing responsibility as life safety department representative at internal and external project meetings. Ability to create and present ideas to clients in form of drawings, renderings, and other exhibits.
  • Gain competency partnering with all design-construction project members. Project deliverables are well coordinated with other disciplines, constructible and punctual. Ability to coordinate and communicate with architects and engineers both internally and externally. Understands project cost throughout the design. Responsible to support life safety CA responsibilities for assigned projects.
  • May function as the Responsible Engineer Of Record accountable for the technical sufficiency of some life safety department project deliverables for a project – limits of responsibility to be determined in concert with more senior department leadership.
  • Must build trusted relationships with colleagues through maintaining ownership for assigned work and delivering efficient and high-quality results. Expected to be a proactive learner, responsible to seek out support when needed, identify expectations, check own work output against quality expectations, and pursue opportunities to grow technical capabilities. Also expected to maintain professional humility and respect in partnership with all team members in pursuit of overall project success. Is further expected to know their own technical limitations and proactively seek out support where needed while maintaining their lead role for the project. Ability to take direction and guidance from more senior staff within company. Ability to provide direction and guidance to less senior staff within department.

And if you have these qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Engineering in a relevant Engineering discipline, Fire Protection preferred.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • EIT required, PE preferred. Ability to obtain PE required.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a security clearance.
  • EXCEL, WORD, PowerPoint, CAD/BIM, Revit.
  • Great attitude and team player.
  • Successful completion of background screening process.


In compliance with this state’s pay transparency laws, the salary range for this role is $87,440 - $131,160. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. (The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and the applicability of collective bargaining agreements).
